A consumer dispute refers to a situation where the individual against whom a complaint is lodged denies or contests the allegations stated in the complaint. The pecuniary jurisdiction for such disputes is determined by the value of the goods or services involved. Consumers have the option to file complaints at the District Commission within their jurisdiction, with provisions for Circuit Benches.
The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) is a quasi-judicial body established in 1988 under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, with its headquarters in New Delhi. It is chaired by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India or a Chief Justice of a High Court. The NCDRC has jurisdiction to entertain complaints valued at more than two crore rupees and also has appellate and revisional jurisdiction over orders of State Commissions or District forum. Any individual aggrieved by an order of the NCDRC may appeal to the Supreme Court of India within 30 days from the date of order/judgment passed by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission..
In a Consumer Forum, different types of complaints can be registered online.
Consumers may file complaints when the products they purchase are faulty, malfunctioning, or do not meet the quality standards promised by the manufacturer or seller. This could include products with missing parts, damaged goods upon delivery, or items that break shortly after purchase.
When firms or professionals provide services that fall short of the expected standards of
quality and efficiency, or professionalism, complaints about faulty services are filed.
This may pertain to substandard workmanship and unfinished projects, etc.
With the rise of e-commerce, consumers may encounter various issues related to online purchases. This could include problems such as delays in delivery, receiving incorrect or damaged items, difficulty in processing returns or refunds, or discrepancies between the product description and the actual product received.
