Overview of Armed Force Tribunal
The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) was established by the Armed Forces Tribunal Act, 2007 to handle appeals resulting from orders, rulings, or sentences of courts-martial.
The AFT will also adjudicate disputes and complaints regarding commission, appointments, enrollment, and conditions of service with regard to individuals subject to the Army Act, 1950, the Merchant Marine Act, 1957, and the Air Force Act, 1950.
Some Important Facts About Armed Forces Tribunal
- Regional Benches :- To cater to the diverse geographical areas and jurisdictions, the AFT has regional benches across the country. These benches are situated in Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Jabalpur, Srinagar, and Jaipur in addition to its principal bench in New Delhi. Apart for the Chandigarh and Lucknow Regional seats, which typically have three seats, all other locations have just one bench. A Judicial Member and an Administrative Member make up the Bench.
- Composition :- The Chairperson of the AFT is either a retired judge of the Supreme Court or a retired chief justice of a high court. Judicial Members consist of retired High Court Judges, while Administrative Members include retired Members of the Armed Forces who held the rank of Major General or equivalent for at least three years, as well as Judge Advocate General (JAG) appointees with a minimum one-year tenure.
- Jurisdiction :- The AFT's jurisdiction extends to matters related to military laws and regulations, including disputes and complaints regarding commission, appointments, enrollment, and conditions of service under the specified Acts.
